Why Bitcoin Forks Exist

A Bitcoin fork occurs when the network's rules change, splitting the blockchain into two versions that no longer share a history. Forks come in two kinds: a hard fork, where the rules change incompatibly and the chains become separate assets, and a soft fork, where the change is backward-compatible and one chain continues. Bitcoin has experienced both, with the hard forks creating new coins that holders of the original received, often valuable, and the soft forks improving the original network without splitting it.

The motivation behind the major hard forks was a decades-long debate about scalability: how to let Bitcoin handle far more transactions. Proponents of larger blocks wanted to raise the block size to increase throughput, while others argued for scaling in layers instead. When agreement proved impossible, factions split, each preserving a different vision of Bitcoin. This ideological and technical conflict is what produced Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin SV and the other forks that a holder may have received airdropped.

The Hard Forks That Created New Assets

  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH): raised the block size to push on-chain throughput higher.
  • Bitcoin Gold (BTG): changed the mining algorithm to be more accessible.

The Distinction Between Hard and Soft Forks

Soft forks are the gentler kind, updating rules so that old software still produces valid transactions while new rules tighten them. Two famous soft forks improved Bitcoin without creating a new coin: Segregated Witness removed parts of transaction data from the block, freeing capacity and enabling second layers, and Taproot improved scripting and privacy. Because soft forks do not split the asset, holders are not given a new coin; the original Bitcoin simply becomes more capable. Understanding this difference is essential to reading any list of Bitcoin forks correctly.

Why Holding Through a Fork Could Credit New Coins

At the moment of a hard fork, the blockchains share the same history up to the split, so holders of Bitcoin on the original chain hold an equal balance on the new chain as well. This is why a wallet that held keys through a fork could claim the forked coin. The value of these airdropped coins varied hugely: some, like Bitcoin Cash shortly after its creation, had real market value, while others faded to near nothing. The practical lesson is that holding through a fork could carry both an entitlement and a tax and security implication worth understanding.

Valuing Forks for What They Are

Not every fork is a valuable asset. Many forked coins exist but trade thinly or not at all, and their market value reflects adoption, not technical merit. Claiming a forked coin carries risks: moving Bitcoin to claim a fork can expose keys, and the tax treatment of a receipt can be complex. A holder should never claim a fork on a wallet whose security they are not prepared to reconsider, and should treat forked coins as speculative, potential windfalls rather than assured value.

A Practical Approach to Understanding Forks

  1. Identify whether the fork is hard, creating a new coin, or soft, improving the existing one.
  2. Confirm whether you held Bitcoin at the fork time and whether claiming the new coin is worth the risk.
  3. Treat any airdropped coin as speculative and track its tax implications.
  4. Never compromise wallet security for the convenience of claiming a minor fork.

Bitcoin's forks are more than a list of coins; they are a record of the community's hardest disagreements about how a decentralised currency should scale.
