What Staking Actually Is
Staking is the process of locking up cryptocurrency in a proof-of-stake network to help secure it, earning rewards in return. Instead of the energy-heavy mining that Bitcoin uses, proof-of-stake blockchains select validators based on how much crypto they lock up, and those validators earn new coins for proposing and validating blocks. Staking effectively turns idle holdings into an income-generating asset, and it has become one of the most popular forms of passive income in crypto.
The returns come from the network's issuance and fee payments. When you stake your coins you commit them for a period, and the protocol rewards you with a yield, often measured in annual percentage rates. Major networks such as Ethereum, Solana and Cardano offer staking with returns ranging from roughly 3 percent to 10 percent depending on the network and how its incentives are structured.
How Staking Compares with Holding
A holder simply owns the coin and hopes the price rises; a staker earns additional coins on top of any price appreciation while the funds are locked. The catch is liquidity: staked funds are typically unavailable for immediate sale for a defined bonding period, and during that window the price can move against you. Before staking, weigh the extra yield against the loss of flexibility and the risk that the lockup prevents you from exiting during a market downturn.

Compare the staking APY with the coin's long-term volatility, because a high yield on a falling coin still leaves a net loss.
The Risks Beyond the Lockup
Staking is not risk-free. The principal is exposed to market price moves, the reward rate can fall as more people stake, and in rare cases a validator's slashing penalty reduces the staked amount for misbehaviour. On centralised exchanges there is also counterparty risk: the exchange holds your coins, and if it fails, recovery can be difficult. Each of these risks argues for staking only a portion of a portfolio, choosing reputable networks and validators, and never staking money needed on short notice.

Staking belongs in the income and yield layer of a crypto allocation, alongside more speculative holdings. It suits investors who take a long-term view and intend to hold the asset regardless of short price swings, because the yield rewards patience. Used sparingly, staking converts a sleeping asset into one that grows, but a disciplined investor avoids chasing the highest advertised yield and instead selects networks with strong security, fair fees and a lockup that matches their liquidity needs.

The tax and accounting treatment of staking rewards deserves as much attention as the yield itself. In many, including Indian, tax systems, staking rewards are taxed as income when received, and the later disposal of the generated coins carries its own consequences, so a staker should track every reward, its value and its cost basis. This record-keeping prevents a painful reconciliation at filing time and turns what looks like passive yield into a properly understood taxable event. It also forces a realistic reading of the net return, since the headline APY is reduced by fees and the tax owed. With that clarity, staking becomes a deliberate part of the income layer rather than a hidden liability.
Choosing Validators and Exits Honestly
Before locking coins, compare not just the headline APY but the lock-up terms, the validator's track record and how the reward rate adjusts as participation grows. An advertised double-digit yield on a small chain often falls once more coins join, and a slashing event on a poorly run validator can erase several months of rewards in one network penalty. For Indian investors, receipt tokens from liquid staking still carry exchange and smart-contract risk even though they stay tradable, so the supposed flexibility has a price of its own. Stake only the slice of the portfolio you would hold through a deep drawdown anyway, and record the rupee value of every reward when it lands for tax time. High APY is the marketing hook; net return after fees, penalties and volatility is the number that decides whether staking was worth the lockup at all.
